Frequently Asked Questions
It is completely normal to have questions before starting counselling, especially if this is your first experience with therapy.
Below are some of the most commonly asked questions about counselling sessions, how things work, and what you can expect.
FAQs
Our first session will involve going through the counselling agreement to ensure you are fully informed and feel comfortable proceeding with counselling. This is a collaborative agreement, and any questions you have will be answered. You will also be invited to discuss what you would like to explore during our time working together. There is no pressure to share anything you are not comfortable with. These are your sessions, where you choose what you would like to explore and move at a pace that feels right for you.
No. Counselling is not only for those experiencing major trauma or crisis. Many people seek support when feeling overwhelmed, anxious, emotionally exhausted, stuck, or struggling with life’s challenges and relationships.
Person-centred counselling offers a warm, supportive, and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. It is based on the belief that every person has the inner ability to grow, heal, and make positive changes when they feel truly heard and understood.
As your counsellor, I will work alongside you with empathy, honesty, and acceptance, helping you explore whatever may be affecting your wellbeing at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Rather than giving advice or telling you what to do, person-centred counselling focuses on helping you develop greater self-awareness, confidence, and clarity, empowering you to move forward in a way that feels right for you.

Counselling can help you better understand patterns linked to overwhelm, emotional regulation, masking, burnout, self-esteem, overthinking, and feeling mentally overloaded.
Sessions provide a supportive space to explore these experiences openly and without judgement.
I have experience supporting individuals who have experienced or been affected by domestic abuse or violence, both within a counselling setting and through charity work. I can support you in processing your experiences, making sense of your emotions, and rediscovering yourself and your life after domestic violence.
Yes. Counselling sessions are confidential and provide a private space where you can speak openly and honestly.
Confidentiality will always be explained clearly during your first session. I am also a member of the BACP and work within their ethical framework to ensure counselling is provided safely, professionally, and ethically. All client information is handled in line with GDPR regulations and kept strictly confidential.
There is no set number of sessions, as everybody’s experience and needs are different. We recommend committing to 3 sessions so the therapeutic relationship can be established and you can start to feel more comfortable sharing. If, after the 3 sessions, you feel this type of therapy is not for you, then we can have an open conversation with no pressure to stay.
Also, ultimately, you know what is right for you, and we will check in regularly about how you are finding therapy and whether it is beneficial to continue.
Feeling nervous is completely normal, especially if this is your first experience with counselling.
My aim is to provide a calm, welcoming, and supportive environment where you feel comfortable and under no pressure.
You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out for support.
